On December 5, 2024, at approximately 2:45 pm, Keizer Police Officer Ben Howden was on patrol when he overheard a medical call over his radio and recognized the address as being nearby. Although the call had been dispatched to Keizer Fire District personnel, Officer Howden immediately responded knowing he could arrive ahead of paramedics. Inside of a minute, Officer Howden was on scene where he found a 59-year-old patient in critical condition. Without hesitation, he entered the home and began performing CPR.
His swift and decisive actions sustained the patient until Keizer Fire District personnel arrived, ultimately saving the individual’s life. Officer Howden’s initiative, professionalism and courage, exemplify the highest standards of service. Officer Howden demonstrated what it means to be a true hero, his actions changed a life forever.
On January 6, 2025, Officer Howden was presented the Life Saving Award during a Keizer City Council meeting. Presenting the award was Randy Redenbaugh whose life was saved by Officer Howden.
